Everybody is faced with an ethical dilemma at some stage. Here are some considerations on how to evaluate and resolve these when they arrive.

Ethical Dilemmas

An ethical dilemma can be caused by a choice between behaving ethical or unethical. For example, choosing to agree to an unethical act in order to keep or obtain a job, or giving up a job and remaining ethical. The choice can also be between knowing that someone else acted or is going to act unethical and keeping quiet about it or informing management and being viewed by the perpetrators in an unfavourable light.

In making an ethical decision an individual must decide which course of action will result in the least harm (financially and reputationally) to the business.

The following is a structured way to approach and solve an ethical dilemma, depending on the situation:
  1. Analyse the situation by obtaining all the relevant facts and identifying everyone who are directly affected by the ethical dilemma.

  2. Consider ethical principles. First look at what the law says. In many instances the law will lead us to the appropriate ethical choice. Secondly, consult the business code of conduct or conduct policy which is the business’ guide to employees. Thirdly, follow informal guidelines, such as:

  • Through our action, will we be treating others in the way that we would want them to treat us?

  • Through our action, will we benefit the majority and serve the common good?

  • Through our action, will we feel ashamed and embarrassed or proud of what we did?

  • How will other people react when they find out about our action or inaction?

  1. Consider and evaluate all possible options that can be taken. State the options that can be taken for the particular situation as well as the probable outcomes or consequence of each option. What will the likely impact be and what values will be upheld or violated by each of the options?

  2. Conclude on a justifiable ethical decision. Make the decision in a structured, logical and objective way. Decide which option is ethically preferable to the others. Describe the practical steps necessary to follow the specific course of action and implement the steps to resolve the dilemma.

  3. Prevent a recurrence of the situation. Prepare or enhance strategies, policies and procedures to ensure changes are made to our personal actions or the actions that take place in our business or workplace to follow and adhere to an ethical code.
